TROJANS UK 23 DRAMA WORKSHOPS AND PERFORMANCE

Continuing on from the success of TROJANS UK 22, we are running eight months of psycho-social support drama workshops, in partnership with the Chelsea Theatre, with a cast of Ukrainian, Syrian and Afghan refugees as well as refugees and asylum seekers from other countries, and host community members.

The Trojans UK 23 production features a core cast of refugees who have been professional actors in their own countries.

The workshops will culminate in a brand new production of Euripides’ Trojan Women. The refugee participants work their own stories into the text of the play.

Trojans UK 23 will be performed as part of the Kensington + Chelsea Festival in the summer of 2023.

The aim of our Trojan Women Project is to help refugees to overcome their feelings of isolation, depression and trauma and give them a platform to tell their stories to the world.

The weekly drama workshops include a hot meal and a creche for participants’ children.

WHY AM I IN YOUR COUNTRY? – New Podcast

We are also launching our podcast, Why Am I In Your Country?

Each episode features someone explaining what exactly drove them to leave their home, and what it’s like arriving in the UK, and living here as a refugee/asylum-seeker.

PREVIOUS WORK

Following on from ten years of work, we premiered a “sharing” of work in progress - the culmination of our TROJANS UK 22 programme - at the Playground Theatre, London W10, as part of the Kensington + Chelsea Festival in August 2022, and at the FT Weekend Festival in September 2022.

Watch the half hour performance film on YouTube at https://youtu.be/HNd6B54HtJo or the 2 minute film trailer at  https://youtu.be/0UeKZELPivg.

We are continuing our project in London SW10, partnering with the Chelsea Theatre in World’s End, and collaborating with Hammersmith & Fulham Council, K&C Council and Westminster Council.

We are also building a London mini tour of Trojans UK 23 and are in discussions with the Riverside Studios and a Westminster theatre, as well as the Chelsea Theatre. We are applying to the Arts Council for funding for the London mini-tour.

Our ultimate intention is to tour this project country-wide over the next two years, starting in Hounslow in autumn 2023. We hope to return to a London theatre for a three month run in late 2024.

Trojans UK is supported by Chelsea Theatre, Playground Theatre, K&C Council, Hammersmith and Fulham Council, Westminster Council, National Lottery Community Fund, FT Weekend Festival, SET Kensington, MountGrange Heritage, the Dillon Foundation, Future Brilliance US, the Rayne Foundation, Lichfield Trust, Newby Trust and many generous private donors.

Charitable donations and grants can be made either via this website and Prospero World (UK registered charity 1163962), which has backed us for the last nine years, or to Trojan Women SCIO.
